Beloka Kelpie Stud & Farm

DSCN4930
Beloka Kelpies is a Kelpie Stud in Welshpool, Victoria, Australia. The stud is run by Paul Macphail and his partner Anneke Homan. Paul started the stud in 1992 and has been breeding and training dogs ever since. Beloka Kelpies are well known in Australia and our dogs have been sold all over the world.

Working Dog Training was developed in response to people who didn’t have the knowledge, place and/or structure to train their own dogs. The facilities at the Beloka Farm are excellent and especially made for training dogs and dog handlers. Our way of teaching has been proven, not only in a farm situation but also with great success in all sorts of trials: yard, field & utility with sheep, cattle and ducks. City and farm dog handlers are both more than welcome to attend a dog school.

Twice a year we run Working Dog Trials at the Beloka farm, Welshpool, an event which grows every year. A great weekend for trialers and spectators.

We have retrained and re-homed many rescue dogs over the years and we have worked together with Australian Working Dog Rescue Inc and Lort Smith.

We have developed a Program for students and schools and have run multiple training days with students from primary and high schools, as well as TAFE, Agritrain and Berry Street.

Beloka Working Dog Training history

Kelpies have always been a big part of my life. Growing up on a dairy farm there were more kelpies than I could count.

There was a real need for good working dogs when I purchased a property at Welshpool in 1990 with steep hills on the Strzelecki Ranges. In the early nineties the stud ‘Beloka Kelpies’ was formed where I focused for strong kelpies that would handle cattle & sheep in rough country.

People came to me with their dog problems and while helping them the ‘Working Dog Education' was formed. As the need grew I traveled throughout Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and South Australia conducting dog schools and helping farmers with their working dog problems. I also demonstrated my kelpies at shows, field days, festivals and at the Beloka Farm.

The first Victorian Cattle Dog Trial was held in 1995 and became the Victorian Cattle Dog Championship in 1996. Now it has grown into a two day Working Dog Festival: with ducks, cattle and sheep dog trials, novelty events and the Top Dog Challenge. Lots of people come and enjoy the working dogs of all types and levels. Some working their dogs and some just watching. We also run a Sheep & Duck trial at Easter. Good fun for the whole family!
